Driving a big rig is an excellent way to build a successful business venture, but it isn't a job for the faint of heart. In fact, according to recent statistics, the average semi truck driver is expected to drive at least two to three thousand miles each week, with many staying out on the road for several weeks at a time. Because of this, it is important for the truck they operate to be comfortable, durable, and dependable. If you are a long distance truck driver or considering becoming one soon, the following tips will help you choose the best truck for your needs and your budget.

Do your research before buying

Unlike personal vehicles, most semi trucks that have been driven over the road will have records available that will help buyers make sure they are choosing a good truck. In most cases, there should be reports available from the electronic control module (ECM), often referred to in the trucking industry as the semi's "black box," that can help buyers get a real glimpse into the truck's past history, including accidents, emission control information, and the emergency braking system. ECM records require special equipment for downloading, but most reputable dealers will have copies of these records that can be shared with interested buyers.

In addition to ECM records, buyers should also review any repair and maintenance records, previous insurance claims, mileage history, traffic accident records, and have the vehicle identification number (VIN) checked to make sure it matches the truck they are viewing. If the truck has been a fleet vehicle, which is common, there may be additional information available from fleet records, as well.

Examine the vehicle thoroughly

Purchasing a used semi is much less expensive than a new one, but it also means you are buying a vehicle that has already been driven hundreds of thousands of miles. Since these trucks are built for high mileage driving, a used one that has been well-maintained should still be able to provide years of additional service, but the buyer must exercise care to ensure they select a dependable vehicle.

While having access to past maintenance and repair records can help to weed out vehicles that have not been properly maintained, having the truck examined by a trustworthy diesel mechanic before purchasing is an excellent final checkpoint. This type of check will help potential buyers have a better understanding of the truck's actual condition at the time of sale, including the notation of any front-end parts or components that are showing wear, and in-depth engine testing and oil analysis information.

Determine if the sleeper and cab offer the right level of comfort

While the mechanical condition and history of the truck are extremely important, it is also wise to make sure that the overall design of the truck's interior and sleeper compartment are comfortable for the driver. Spending some time inside the cab of the truck to determine if leg room, height, and other dimensions of the interior are comfortable is a good way weed out trucks that may be tiresome to drive later on.

In addition, make sure that the truck offers a comfortable sleeping area, and sufficient storage compartments to contain clothing, supplies, bedding, and other essentials you will need when living in your vehicle for weeks at a time. Creature comforts are also important in helping ensure that trucks are comfortable for the drivers who must spend long stretches of time in them, so be sure to check for good ventilation, functional heating and air conditioning systems, as well as such as hook ups for entertainment systems, lighting, and a small refrigerator for food storage.

Buy only from a reputable used semi dealer

Reputable used freightliner and semi dealers will welcome questions and inspections on the vehicles they offer for sale, as well as being happy to provide any records available for the truck. If you are having trouble finding the right truck for your needs, discussing your driving situation with the dealer can be helpful in narrowing your search and ensuring that you purchase a dependable, well-maintained used semi truck.
