Running boards serve an excellent purpose when you have a pickup truck. These auto accessories affix to the side of your ride to help you step right up into the truck's cab without climbing in awkwardly, which can be difficult to do if you are not that tall or have mobility issues. If you have a dressed-up pickup truck that you like to keep looking as awesome as possible, the basic running boards may be a little too bland for your taste. Luckily, truck running boards can be souped up just like other parts of your vehicle. Check out three cool ways to dress up the running boards you have on your pickup truck.

Add LED light strips to the underside of the running boards.

LED light strips are inexpensive, low-profile, and easy to install. These strips of small light diodes can even be battery powered so you don't have to run any ugly wires to the auto's battery. Pick up a few strips of LED lights in a color of your choosing and install them just under the lip of the running boards you have on your truck. When on, there will be a cool glow coming from below the running boards to illuminate the step.

Add vinyl graphics or pin striping along the sides of the running boards.

You can pick up tiny viny graphics and vinyl pinstriping material at just about any auto parts store, and these decals make a really good way to dress up a set of plain-jane running boards. You could install some graphics along the outer edge of the running boards or even at certain stepping points just to make them look a little out of the ordinary and more appealing. If you want a little something flashy, go for graphics appliques that have a metallic finish.

Add chrome elements and details to the running boards.

Chrome is pretty much a staple when it comes to dressing up a ride, so you can find it in multiple forms just about anywhere and can even have pieces custom made for your vehicle. If your running boards have basic rubber step covers, try swapping them out for custom-made chrome plating instead. Chrome plating can be found that has tread marks for extra grip, and this will look really nice on a set of running boards. Likewise, you could also swap out the connective hardware for chrome pieces if you want to add even more pizazz.
